People often ask me what happened to all the pheasants. As always, the destruction of habitat is a major factor: Most of the grass-filled ditches where pheasants once nested have been eliminated. Some farming practices have resulted in nests and young birds being crushed under heavy machinery.

Fox, coyote, owls and hawks are the primary predators. Raccoons and skunks eat pheasant eggs. Other animals likely prey on eggs, chicks, and/or hens, too.

In captivity, ring-necked pheasants can live 11 to 18 years. In the wild, their average lifespan is 3 years.

PHEASANT ECOLOGY: PREDATORS

Predation accounts for three-fourths of unsuccessful nests, and nearly all of adult mortality (excluding hunting) is directly predator related.

Ring-necked pheasant are not native to California, but were brought into the state and the rest of the country from Asia during the 1800s. The birds thrived in the state until profound changes in agricultural and land-use practices in the 1980s and '90s led to their decline, according to the state.

In the midst of the feed price increases, most of our other costs increased also (e.g. health insurance for our employees, wages, and gas, diesel and LP to name a few). And the annual “cost of living” rose 3% on average too.
