Merlin Trials are short puzzles that can be found throughout the various Regions in Hogwarts Legacy's open-world. Merlin Trials are arguably the most lucrative of Exploration Challenges, as completing them can earn you additional Gear Inventory Slots, which will save you the trouble of having to frequently sell or destroy the loot you've collected. The Merlin Trials guide applies to all versions of Hogwarts Legacy, including the original PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S versions of Hogwarts Legacy, as well as the Switch version from November, 2023.

How to Unlock Merlin Trials

To begin taking on the Merlin Trials, you'll need to complete the Trials of Merlin Main Story mission in Lower Hogsfield. After completing this mission, Merlin Trials will become discoverable but you'll need Mallowsweet Leaves to begin each puzzle.

Thankfully Nora Treadwell has gifted you 5 Mallosweet Leaves, but if you plan on taking on additional Merlin Trials, you'll need to acquire more Mallowsweet by one of two means. First, you can purchase the resource from various vendors in The Highlands, including The Magic Neep in Hogsmeade, Leopold Babco*cke near Hogsmeade Station, or Arn in Hogwarts Valley. However, these vendors typically have a very low inventory of Mallowsweet, and once sold out, they will not restock the resource for 2.5 days.

The more reliable way to collect Mallowsweet Leaves is to purchase the ability to grow Mallowsweet from The Magic Neep in Hogsmeade and complete your first Herbology class, unlocking the ability to grow your own Mallowsweet. You can then grow Mallowsweet Leaves in the Greenhouses and in the Room of Requirement.

How to Solve Every Merlin Trial Type

You can watch the video at the top of the page with a detailed explanation of how to complete each Merlin Trial variant, or refer to this quick list of all nine explained in just one sentence each:

• Timed Braziers: use Confringo to quickly light up all braziers mounted on columns -- the column lengths show how long each brazier will stay lit.

• Orb Towers: use attack spells to destroy orbs mounted on top of pillars.

• Magic Spheres: use Acio to pull the sets of four magical orbs into the circular altars.

• Stone Orb: Use Depulso and your attack spells to roll the large stone orbs to the circular hole destination.

• Destructible Henges: the stone monuments marked with green carvings need to be blown up with Confringo.

• Lumos Butterflies: use Lumos to attract the glowing butterfly swarms and bring them to the magical stone lanterns to light them.

• Jumping Challenge: climb the stone structures and jump from one end to the other without touching the ground in this "The Floor is Lava" challenge.

• Repair: use the Reparo spell to fix broken statues.

• Match-Three: use the Flipendo spell to align the three symbols on each stone pillar.

How to Earn Additional Gear Inventory Slots

To earn additional Gear Inventory Slots, you'll first need to follow the instructions above to unlock Merlin Trials. Once they're discoverable, you'll need to complete Merlin Trials, and when you reach specific milestones, you'll earn additional Gear Inventory Slots.

Though you'll automatically earn the inventory slots when you reach a milestone, the inventory slots will not become active until you claim your reward from the Exploration Challenges tab.
